COMPOSITE MATERIALS USED IN AIRCRAFT

Composite materials play a major role in aircraft structural design. They comprise the filler frame and matrix support binder. It can be stated that the composite structure has the binder as the main component with the filler as an additional component. Further division refers to metal and non-metal binders. Non-metal composite materials i.e. polymer composite materials have been most widely used.

With polymer composite materials glass fibre, carbon fibre, pine and organic fibre are used as fillers. Synthetic resins are used for the production of binder component, of which epoxy resins and polyester resins are most common.

Composite material, carbon fibre – epoxy resin is one of the major structural materials in aircraft industry, for its advantageous physical, chemical and mechanical properties.

By 40% utilization of composite materials in aircraft structural design, the mean value of aircraft mass can be reduced by 12%. The mentioned reduction can by way of restructuring the aircraft geometry result in a reduction of aircraft weight by 17%. Respective reduction of the engine mass and lesser quantities of fuel can introduce further 4% savings resulting in a total reduction of aircraft mass by 21%.

Composite materials shall in the future stay the most promising aircraft and spacecraft materials of tomorrow and their applications shall steadily grow in number.
