RIVER TRANSPORT IN EUROPE AND THE RHINE-MAIN-DANUBE CANAL

This paper deals with the meaning and economic aspect of river transport in Europe with particular reference to the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal.

The representation covers two principal hubs of river transport activities in Europe: the Rhine and Danube navigation region. The first section brings some most pronounced characteristics of the Rhine navigation region including: fleet capacities water-ways (navigation routes), structure of fleet capacities by type and individual countries of the Rhine navigation region, transport output (volumes) etc.
The second section deals with the basic characteristics of organization/management and conditions of earning the income in the Danube navigation region; some great and significant differences have been observed between the two regions originating primarily from the different socio - political and economic systems.

The solutions recommended reveal the fact that the freedom of navigation on the future major waterway which will be ready for inland navigation in 1992. will be limited to a degree and subject to a variety of special permissions.
