CONDITION OF CAPACITIES AND AGE STRUCTURE OF THE SEABORNE COASTAL LINER FLEET

Critical analysis of the existing state of affairs and age structure of the seaborne coastal liner fleet refers us to the fact that the existing capacities even now cannot meet satisfactorily the increased transport demand. The condition of vessels is alarming because the mere simple reproduction of the fleet is not completed while the average age of vessels is continually rising.

Three quarters of the seaborne coastal liner fleet (77,4%) is 20 years and over, which is beyond the exploitation life of the vessels as compared to the world fleet of sea - going vessels where only 11% of capacities are 20 years and over.

If this present adverse trend of fleet rejuvenation is continued the seaborne coastal liner traffic may become a limiting element of development of the island and coastal regions in view of the more and more vigorous development of tourist trade and increased transport demand of population.
